By dedicating merit, we share the merit generated by our practice with others. Transferring merit to others is a way to avoid clinging to our good deeds or allowing our merit-making to turn into a strategy for constructing a self. Our “transfer of merit” list is a regular part of our liturgy and is usually read out loud during our service. It consists of two lists.

Those who are ill or in difficulty: Names are maintained on this list for six weeks, unless there is an update to the situation and they are added again or if someone asks for a name to be removed from the list because the situation has changed.

Those who have died: Names are maintained on the list for seven weeks.
