Jukai is a ceremony during which the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts are given to those wishing to formally become a Buddhist. The precepts are the moral and ethical teachings of Zen. During this ceremony, the precepts are given and received by those becoming Buddhists for the first time. In addition, it is a time during which those who have received the precepts previously renew their vows.
